Magnificent Mysterious Fairy Chimneys and Pasabag Valley
The “Fairy Chimneys” and Pasabag Valley are among the most enchanting natural wonders of Cappadocia, Turkey. These unique geological formations, often referred to as “fairy chimneys,” are tall, thin spires of rock that protrude from the ground, some reaching heights of up to 130 feet (40 meters).
Fairy Chimneys
The fairy chimneys were formed millions of years ago through volcanic activity. The ash from these eruptions solidified into a soft rock known as tuff, which was then covered by a layer of basalt, a harder rock. Over time, wind and water eroded the softer tuff, leaving behind the harder basalt as caps on top of the spires. This process created the iconic mushroom-like shapes that we see today.
Pasabag Valley (Monks Valley)
Pasabag Valley, also known as Monks Valley, is one of the most famous areas in Cappadocia to see these fairy chimneys. The valley is named “Monks Valley” because of the hermitages carved into some of these formations. Early Christian monks sought solitude in this area, living in the caves and carving out small chapels in the rocks.
The valley is a surreal landscape, where you can walk among the chimneys, some of which have multiple rock caps and are shaped like pillars or cones. The colors of the rocks, varying from beige to rusty red, add to the mysterious and otherworldly atmosphere.
